As a foster parent I have very definite opinions on this issue! My husband and I became foster parents because we wanted to make a difference in the life of a child. The task seems daunting considering the statistics on child abuse in our county. Over 3 million children are at risk of exposure to parental violence each year while I9 to 10 million children , under the age of 18 are directly affected by substance-abusing parents.
Have you heard the story about the boy picking up starfish on the beach after a storm and throwing them in the water? An old man came by and asked the boy what he was doing. The boy replied that he was throwing the starfish back into the ocean. Looking over the beach strewn with thousands of creatures the old man admonished the boy, "Son, you can't make a difference." Picking up one more starfish and tossing it into the ocean tide the boy replied, "It made a difference to that one."
That is what we do, we make a difference in our society one child at a time.
